The Crooked Fiddle Band
“The Crooked Fiddle Band are completely surprising. The music is original and quixotic, and yet has the strength of some deep and strong roots. I can't say I've ever heard anything else like it!.” Brian Eno
The Crooked Fiddle Band have built a reputation as one of Australia's most intense live music experiences.
Their high octane performances compel audiences into a joyous frenzy of dancing and revelry in response to the dark, ecstatic energy and medieval battle-like climaxes.
Fresh from their second tour to festivals in UK and Europe, to the Australian launches of their debut album “Overgrown Tales”, recorded in Chicago in early 2011 with legendary engineer Steve Albini in his Electrical Audio studios. Whilst the worst snowstorms in 15 years blanketed the city, Albini (Joanna Newsom, Nirvana, The Pixies, Gogol Bordello) captured the band live and raw – with a set of tunes that roam across a wide range of styles and influences whilst maintaining an intense yet cinematic energy. Driven by the beautiful and furious fiddling of Jess Randall, and underpinned by a rhythm section featuring Gordon Wallace (bouzouki, guitar, banjo, mandolin), Mark Stevens (double bass, Appalachian dulcimer, charango) and Joe Gould (drum kit, hand percussion, garbage bin, vocals) the Crooked Fiddle Band sound blasts, rocks and grooves to the point of dementia, compelling listeners into a joyous frenzy.

Darren Hanlon + David Dondero (USA) & Shelley Short (USA)
A veteran of the Australian music scene, having completed stints as a supporting guitarist and keyboard player for the Lucksmiths, the Simpletons, the Deerhunters and Mick Thomas (Weddings, Parties, Anything), singer/songwriter Darren Hanlon officially stepped out on his own in 1999. A charming and clever songwriter, drawing comparisons to Evan Dando and Billy Bragg, Hanlon wasted little time in establishing himself as a compelling storyteller and prolific songwriter with his observational wit and memorable pop hooks.
Releasing his Early Days EP in 2000, he quickly gained recognition within the Australian indie music scene (his music regularly featured on Triple J) and begun touring Europe and the United States shortly thereafter. In 2002, his full-length debut, Hello Stranger, a wonderful mix of folk-rock and quirky songwriting was released to comparably favorable reviews. Little Chills arrived in 2004, followed by Fingertips and Mountaintops (2006) and a collection of B-sides and rarities called Pointing Ray Guns At Pagans (2009). In 2010, Darren celebrated 10 years as a solo musician with the release of I Will Love You At All, which was met with critical acclaim and featured the hit single All These Things.
Known for his engagement with his audiences, through his down-to-earth storytelling at his live shows, Darren has toured with Billy Bragg, the Magnetic Fields, Violent Femmes and continues to tour across the globe. More info...

Howling Bells
A raw, psychedelic third studio album, and the sequel to 2009's Radio Wars, the recording of The Loudest Engine saw Howling Bells, the Australian-formed, London-based four piece forge a sonic union with Nevada's expansive surroundings and Las Vegas's street-soiled vibe.
Howling Bells' desert sessions were the final part of a year-long writing adventure that saw the band, on their own tours and with the likes of Coldplay and The Killers, wander through strange American outposts and seedy European back streets in their downtime. Their travels provided endless lyrical inspiration; much of The Loudest Engine was written on the road.
It was on the road that Howling Bells first linked with The Killers' Mark Stoermer. Touring together, the two groups bonded over their love of similar music; so, when Howling Bells began planning the recording of their latest project at the tail end of summer 2010, The Killers' bassist was the first person they called. The result is 12 songs that burn with a ferocious intensity. More info... Tickets $19.50 inc GST and booking fees

Folk Uke
Folk Uke is Cathy Guthrie and Amy Nelson (daughters of Arlo Guthrie and Willie Nelson). Though they were raised on the road with two of the most revered families in music, these two held out against the idea of going into the “family business” for as long as they could.
Their parents were friends since the early 70’s, but Cathy and Amy didn’t meet until 1990 when they found themselves working together in a restaurant in San Diego. They quickly realized that they had both grown up the same way: sleeping in guitar cases, riding tour buses, and joining their dads on stage. A beautiful friendship emerged.
As fate would have it, Amy and Cathy began playing with lyrics and various musical instruments. It wasn’t long before they stumbled into a music store and accidentally bought a ukulele. It was the year 2000 and Folk Uke was born. Amy, with her guitar, and Cathy, with her uke, entertained friends and family with their strange songs. To their utter surprise, they began receiving legitimate show offers. They weren’t very good, but they were funny and quite charming.
“I grew up in a family of folk music. Swearing wasn’t necessarily allowed, but if you sang it, it was ok and if it was in harmony, it was even better.” — Cathy Guthrie.
Folk Uke has appeared across the USA at venues ranging from NYC’s Hard Rock Café, Hempstalk, The Woody Guthrie Festival, New Orleans’s Tipitina’s, Willie’s Fourth of July Picnic, John Trudell’s Give Love Give Life project. In 2005 they released Folk Uke, their self-titled debut CD, which has earned them a cult following and has caught the attention of anyone who has been exposed to them. Their vocal harmonies are sweet; their melodies are contagious; and their lyrics are explicit. Tickets $24.50 inc GST and booking fees

Kirsty Akers & Mark Sholtez
Hailed as a remarkable talent by fellow artists, musicians, media and stalwarts of the music industry Kirsty, a descendent
of the Wanaruah people, is fearless and brutally honest with a penchant for taking her songs to places others fear to
tread. Kirsty has scored 8 consecutive hits, including five top 10s, in her homeland.
Kirsty is a sublime mix of old meets new, youth meets tradition.
Kirsty returned to the airwaves in April 2011 with the single ‘In Spite Of Ourselves’, the first track from her newest
album ‘Naked’. For the single the diminutive rootsy performer with the distinctive vocal style joins forces with ARIA award
winner Kevin Mitchell otherwise known as Bob Evans (of hit-makers Jebediah and indy fave Basement Birds), on the risqué
John Prine penned classic. Already a popular request on Triple J ‘In Spite Of Ourselves’ has
become yet another success for the proudly independent performer.‘In Spite Of Ourselves’ is the first single from Kirsty’s CD ‘Naked’ released in July 2011
Mark Sholtez:
Mark has opened for Sting on his winery tour this year. Sholtez surfaced on our radar with his 2006 jazz-inspired
debut 'Real Street', (an ARIA Top 30 album and also debuting in the ARIA Jazz and Blues chart at #1 where it stayed for
ten consecutive weeks, was nominated for an ARIA award in that same year, and in 2007 won him a converted APRA Music Award)
Sholtez had a vision of his second album. Charmed by his production work with Madeleine Peroux, he contacted American producer Larry Klein.
After one lengthy phone call they'd already decided they wanted to make a record together. What happened next was Sholtez' heart-string-pulling demos reached the right ears and a new record contract with Warner was inked.
Soon Sholtez was flying to LA to record with Klein at the cities' famed Sunset Sounds studio. This will be one of those 'special' evenings.

Wendy Matthews and Glenn Shorrock
Every once in a while you get the opportunity to hear legendary singers teaming up together to offer an audience a night that they won’t forget for a very long time.
Wendy Matthews and Glenn Shorrock are two of those singers. There is just something magic about the way they sound together. Glenn knew this the first time he heard Wendy’s voice.
Lets rewind back to 1978. At that time, Glenn was on tour in America with Australian hit making trailblazers The Little River Band. When Glenn heard Wendy sing with him for the first time, he instantly offered Wendy a chance to travel to Australia to record and perform on his then solo project “Villain of the Peace”.
Who could have known how this would dramatically change a young Wendy Matthews life forever.
Back to the present and Wendy, now an Australian citizen for more than 20 years is one of our most successful female artists of all time. Glenn is, of course, the iconic singer songwriter who’s record sales have amassed over 25 million.
Between them they have graced Australian radio playlists for decades with hits such as:
Cool Change , Reminiscing, The Day You Went Away, Standing Strong, Help is on it’s way, Little Ray of Sunshine, I Don’t Want To Be With Nobody But You, Fridays Child, Emma, Home on a Monday and many, many more
An Evening with Wendy Matthews and Glenn Shorrock features all their hits as well as a selection of their favorite songs together. These two performers have a story to tell, and offer an audience a night they’ll not forget. Tickets $55 inc GST and booking fees

My Friend The Chocolate Cake
Their name alone should have ensured a quiet life for My Friend the Chocolate Cake. No one dreamed of ARIA awards, two years of sold-out Edinburgh Festival dates or the kind of ageless and eternally devoted audience most bands with cooler names would kill for. Somewhere within the unlikely union of kitchen sink piano tales, vivid chamber orchestration and hell-raising instrumental shenanigans, the Melbourne band has carved out a 15 year, five album history that culminates...so far in the 19 track retrospective, Parade.
It all started as harmless fun. In 1989, David and cellist Helen Mountfort were playing in globally acclaimed ambient/world music ensemble Not Drowning Waving when they opted to unplug and unwind with a few more breezy compositions. The idea of the band began when David took a holiday in New Zealand and wrote a collection of songs that didn't fit into the 'Not Drowning Waving' style. He & Helen then began My Friend The Chocolate Cake with the intention of playing all acoustic music. Tickets $29.50 inc GST and booking fees

James Reyne & band
It’s the voice that defines James Reyne – unmistakably and unapologetically Australian, singing with incisive accuracy, warmth and rich humour about the Australian experience. His great talent for writing poignant songs propels that distinctive voice, rich in melody and compelling rhythm. James crafts a sound forged from more than 30 years of experience and success, and while his modus operandi remains recording new material.
Characterised by James’ unique vocal style and rakish charm, Australian Crawl became one of the bands that defined Australia’s pub rock era of the 1980s, translating its live energy and knack for vibrant melodies into discs that won saturation radio airplay. All of Australian Crawl’s albums achieved Top 5 status, equating to more than 1 million album sales in Australia. As the hits kept rolling on – Beautiful People, Errol, The Boys Light Up, Things Don’t Seem, Oh No Not You Again and Downhearted – James also came to earn serious acclaim and respect as a songwriter. Reckless, which became a national No.1 hit single for the band in November 1983, confirmed the tenor of James’ writing ability and continues to resonate powerfully as one of Australia’s cool cultural anthems. Faker + special guests
'Get Loved' is more than just the name of the new Faker album - their first for three years. A long and difficult journey, the story of 'Get Loved' will be told in parts - singles, remixes, EPs, videos, live shows and an album. It is their most daring and anthemic work - but also their most personal set of songs to date. Deciding to produce their own record for the first time, they enlisted the help of an American engineer, Eric J Dubowski, and the support of friends Paul Mac and Jonny Seymour working as Stereogamous (for extra programming and mentoring), and set sail on the seven seas with songs like 'How To Survive', 'Back When Solvents' and the first single 'Dangerous'.
After finishing the new record and releasing ‘Dangerous’, Nathan and Nic felt a part of the story was missing. So in June, they headed back into the studio (well the studio in their living room) with their new band-mates Liam and Chris and recorded three new songs in the space of a week.
'How Did We Not Get Loved', a prequel EP to the full length record is a five track collection featuring two album tracks and three brand new tracks. It tells a different story: it looks at the darker side of relationships and loves lost.
As described in the opening line of the (sort of) title-track, Love Survival Guide, there is in fact “nothing here about that in this stupid guidebook”. So, in lieu of any kind of plan, Faker really just want to sing you to sleep at night, maybe elate you at a gig and let you know that there are always Hearts To Break, but first...they just want you to get back in there and dance.
SPECIAL TICKET DEAL!!
$23.50 gets you entry to the show + the new EP 'How Did We Not Get Loved' will be posted to you on release!

Lachlan Bryan & the The Wildes + Special Guests Dan Lyons
+ Sahara Beck
Alt-country darlings ‘Lachlan Bryan and the The Wildes’ craft songs with an
authenticity rarely heard in Australian country music circles and scarcely matched in more
fashionable genres. He’s an old soul. He follows in the tradition of those whom he describes as ‘the real guys’ – the Steve Earles, Townes van Zandts and Lyle Lovett’s of this world. His songs have characters, back-stories, sometimes even plots. His records have body counts. Lachlan’s protagonists are neck-deep in (and out) of love. They’re lovers, sinners, criminals, religious zealots.
To support the release of their new album ‘Fly by Night’, Lachlan will embark on a set of tour dates along the east and west coasts of Australia in October, November and December performing with The Wildes. These dates will follow a short visit to Austin and Nashville for the Americana Music Association Festival. Tickets $15.50 inc GST and booking fees

Graveyard Train (Melb)
Graveyard Train ripped chains and hammers from hell to forge Horror Country. They are the pioneers of a new genre that will make you cry and curse and scream. Ghost stories, murder ballads and tales of redemption are crooned through melodies plucked directly from the afterlife. Haunted love, haunted souls, even haunted clothes are typical subjects covered by the songs of the Graveyard Train. These aren’t the kind of ghost stories kids tell around the campfire – they are the tales of horror whispered by inmates in the dark, the tales of bloodlust muttered by the insane, the tales of woe and regret whimpered through dying last words. Six men play men’s instruments just as men were born to do. Chain, washboard, steel guitar, banjo and harmonica – instruments with a long history of storytelling underlay six voices tempered by whiskey, blood and poverty. Graveyard train offer penance to this town of sinners. Beware the plague of locusts, beware the hail of frogs, beware the localized apocalypse that is the Graveyard Train.

Jordie Lane + Mike Noga (the Drones)
Melbourne’s Jordie Lane returns from an extended stint in the U.S. to release his second album, Blood Thinner. To celebrate its impending release on Friday, July 15th (Vitamin Records), Jordie is thrilled to announce a national tour with more than 20 dates across our great big land in July and August.
After spending much of the last year baking in the Californian desert,
Jordie Lane’s second LP takes a sharp and unique turn away from his critically acclaimed studio debut, Sleeping Patterns. Completely stripped back to the bare bones of recording techniques, the tracks on Blood Thinner were captured between a remote desert motel room, a basement and, finally, a bleeding hot garage in Eagle Rock, LA.
After releasing his highly acclaimed debut album Sleeping Patterns in June 09, Jordie has since played sold-out tours across the country, and has appeared on ABC TV’s Spicks and Specks, and SBS’s RockWiz, as well as being included on Triple J’s 'Like A Version Vol 6', for his brilliant version of MGMT’s ‘Electric Feel’ with Jen Cloher.
Jordie has been invited to play shows alongside artists such as Cat Power(USA), Loudon Wainwright III, Neko Case(USA), Charlie Parr(USA), Old Crow Medicine Show(USA) and National tours with locals, Tex Perkins. Festivals include Port Fairy 07,09,11, Falls Festival 09-10 and West Coast Blues Roots 2010. Tickets $19.50 inc GST and booking fees

Peregian and Nambour Originals Insurance Fundraiser
Cheap Fakes + more
The popularity of the Sunshine Coasts ‘Originals’ concerts is ever growing and along with that comes extra costs to be covered. The public liability insurance for these concerts has increased with the addition of the Nambour Originals and the not for profit governing body ‘East Coast Originals Inc.’ is staging a fundraising party at Joes Waterhole in Eumundi to raise the four thousand dollars needed for the twenty million cover required by council to issue any further permits for the events.
‘Cheap Fakes’ a Brisbane funk groove outfit have become one of the most popular bands to play the Originals concerts in recent times and have agreed to donate their time to headline the show and help ensure the continuation of the iconic events. Two other acts will warm the stage for Cheap Fakes to do their celebrated thing.

Apologies to our younger supporters, but this is an 18+ venue.

Ange Takats with Silent Feature Era
Sunshine Coast songstress Ange Takats returns to Joe's Waterhole after a busy few months of touring around the country. The Peregian local recently released her first novel, The Buffalo Funeral - a memoir about her unusual journey from foreign correspondent to folk singer in Thailand. Prior to launching the book on the Coast, Ange featured on Richard Fidler's ABC Conversations program - sharing her songs and stories with listeners across Australia.
She returns to Joe's after performances at the National Folk Festival in Canberra and Fairbridge Festival in Western Australia.... and before she heads south to take part in the Byron Bay Writers' Festival.
Ange has a bag of new songs, destined for her next album, which she'll be testing out during the show. She'll also be playing tracks from her award winning debut album Aniseed Tea - with some live accompaniment from Brisbane band Silent Feature Era - who will also play a full set of music during the evening.
"I'm delighted to be playing a gig with the Silent Feature Era. I met the guys a few years ago and they're responsible for the rather awesome instrumentation on my debut album! Band member Adrian Mauro produced and recorded the songs - and played on almost every track along with fellow Silent Feature Era member Greg Cathcart. The lads formed their own band and have recorded a phenomenal album. It's going to be great to hear their songs live," Ange said.
Silent Feature Era consists of some of Brisbane's finest music talents and their debut album This Old Leather Heart has been receiving high praise from music critics across the country with it's kaleidoscope of dark folk, alt. country and cowboy rock.

Clare Bowditch ‘Winter Secrets Tour’ with Lanie Lane
Last year was significant for our most inimitable female singer songwriter, Clare Bowditch, who was crowned Rolling Stone Magazine’s ‘Woman of the Year’ for her contribution to culture. She was also handpicked by the legendary Leonard Cohen to open shows on his Australian tour.
This year, the lovable and inventive Miss Clare Bowditch decided to try her hand at something a touch different and collaborate with a few fellow artists (Gotye, Golden Arrows) on writing some new songs and re-worked versions of material from previous albums.
Through the process Clare met Lanie Lane, a Sydney songstress gaining popularity for her rockabilly swing-folk sounds, and thus began a musical love affair between the two ladies. Not only have they written and recorded a stunning new duet ‘Now You’re Home’, but Clare is also thrilled to be taking Lanie on the road for her ‘Winter Secrets’ tour which will be weaving its way throughout all major capital cities and key regional areas this June/July. The single will be released on Monday 23 May, to be followed by a brand new EP and tickets for the tour are on sale now. Tickets $32.50 inc GST and booking fees

THE MIDDLE EAST + Leader Cheetah & Grand Salvo
"I WANT THAT YOU ARE ALWAYS HAPPY"
ALBUM & NATIONAL TOUR
April 8 sees Townsville band The Middle East release their long-anticipated debut album "I Want That You Are Always Happy". The band will take their new album out on the road this June for an album launch tour involving a series of performances around the country.
"I Want That You Are Always Happy" is dark, melancholy, thick with melody and eventually instilled with hope. The band may have taken their time with it, but Townsville time is a slower than your average city clock. Recorded between tours at the band's’ Townsville studio in late 2009, the band then shifted to Midlake’s Denton studio in March 2010 after their performances at the South by South West festival. Upon returning from their international travels, The Middle East put the finishing touches on the album within a makeshift Cairns-based studio.
The album is the follow up to the band's 2009 EP "The Recordings of The Middle East", and features the songs "Jesus Came To My Birthday Party", "Black Death 1349" and "Land of the Bloody Unknown".

Kinky Friedman & Van Dyke Parks
Mobile Industries and Troy Horse are proud to announce the double bill tour of two of the USA's songwriting legends Kinky Friedman and Van Dyke Parks who will be performing together on stage for the first time in Australia.
Parks' career started in the 60's, famously collaborating with Brian Wilson on the classic "lost" Beach Boys album Smile. In the decades since, his arranging and writing CV includes names like Bruce Springsteen, U2, Cher, Ry Cooder, Linda Ronstadt, Sheryl Crow, Joanna Newsom and of course, Kinky Friedman. Van Dyke has also played on albums by The Grateful Dead, The Byrds and Keith Moon with his own Song Cycle album from 1968 now considered an American masterpiece.
Never one to rest on his laurels, Van Dyke has also dabbled in acting and producing; he has authored several books and written scores for theatre, television and film.
Like so many cool people in the boom generation, Kinky Friedman first saw the world through the Peace Corps in the sixties. Kinky did his PC time in Borneo, wherein he introduced the Frisbee to the natives and taught farming techniques to people who had been farming successfully for thousands of years. But it was in Borneo that Kinky began to write the tunes that would propel the rest of his life.
Friedman released his first album in 1973. Sold American, with his band the Texas Jewboys, contained what has become his signature song They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore and the rest of that decade saw him tour with Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue and play residencies in NYC where regular guests included John Belushi and Robin Williams amongst others.
Kinky's career has now expanded to include over 30 novels, a campaign to become governor of Texas (he came 3rd), a cigar and coffee empire and 2011 will also see an album of Kinky covers released by his old pal Willie Nelson. Tickets $42.50 inc GST and booking fees

Jeff Martin 777 ‘Semi Acoustic Show’
‘The Ground Cries Out’ Australian Album Launch Tour
Jeff Martin returns to Joes with a new band 777 to launch their debut album ‘The Ground Cries Out’.
Jeff’s band from the past, ‘The Tea Party’ shattered alternative rock conventions of simplicity being the first, best way to a hit by incorporating elements of world music (mainly that of East India) and Classic Rock's love of instrumental virtuosity. Those who remember ‘Splendor Solis’ and ‘The Edges Of Twilight’ will recognize the sounds of both on ‘The Ground Cries Out’ from the moment the title track crashes through with guitars, exotic percussion, a Cambodian tro and santoor blazing around Martin's booming, senses-shattering baritone. For those who do remember, “The Ground Cries Out” is the best kind of homecoming for Jeff Martin and that will be instantly captivating for them, but those who aren't familiar will be equally hypnotized; the renewed mysticism of the old world shines beautifully, the singer is in fine voice and the combination of the two casts a perfect new incantation of an old spell. Colin Hay Solo "Gathering Mercury" Album Launch
Ticket proceeds go to the Premiers Flood Appeal... Huge thanks Colin!
Colin Hay may be best known as the lead singer for Men At Work, the platinum selling Australian band that topped worldwide charts in the 80s with anthems like “Down Under,” “Overkill,” and “Who Can It Be?” Hay’s justifiably proud of his place in pop history, but since moving to Los Angeles in 1989, he’s made 11 solo albums and he reckons that Gathering Mercury may be the best of the lot.
“These are some of the strongest songs I’ve ever written,” Hay says from his home studio in the hills of Topanga Canyon. “The loss of my father last year brought an extra emotional contingent to them. I don’t have an idea of an afterlife, but I do feel like I had his help when I was writing this album. He wasn’t a songwriter himself, but he was a good singer, so I put myself in his place and wrote songs like he might have done.” More info... Ticket proceeds go to the Premiers Flood Appeal... With a cover of The Beatles 'Blackbird' that is so original it’s a shame to call it a cover, a host of tracks from UR including their self proclaimed favourite 'City On Fire'- a 10 minute instrumental with more open chords breakdown than you can poke a penguin at, I don’t envy any band on the same bill as these guys.” Joining the Deckchairs for this show are local acts KHAN and THE FLUMES. White Top Mountaineers (USA) + Old Man Luedecke (Canada)
For fans of American old time mountain music (and roots music lovers alike), the Whitetop Mountaineers are a live act not to be missed. From Virginia, USA, Martha Spencer and Jackson Cunningham return to Australia by popular demand. In 2008, 2009, and 2010 the duo stunned and delighted audiences across the country with their performance of American mountain music, song & dance – they are the ‘real deal’.
Both musicians are skilled multi-instrumentalists – Jackson on guitar, mandolin & clawhammer banjo, and Martha on fiddle, guitar & banjo. They are both strong vocal performers and their close harmonies are indicative of the old time and bluegrass traditions from which they draw their repertoire.
Chris (Old Man) Luedecke lives in Halifax Nova Scotia and works all over the huge country of Canada, from the Yukon to Vancouver. He is a young man with an old soul who doesn’t sugar coat his fears and this lets his songs breathe with a fresh breeze of bittersweet hopefulness.
He channels a refreshing energy from folk giants like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger with maybe a hint of Loudon Wainwright III. But it’s his contemporary lyrics coupled with the irresistible rhythm of the old time banjo that connect and make him so loved with his audiences. Kim Churchill + Ashleigh Mannix + Justin Carter
Guitarist and songwriter Kim Churchill is a truly gifted soul. At just 19 years of age, his implausible talent and unique approach to his music is something to be in awe of. Kim’s style is explosive, with intricate fingerpicking, percussive beats on the body of the guitar, and two-handed tapping intertwined with an earthy stomp box, powerful blues harmonica melodies and soulful voice
Justin Carter has compiled a collection of stories that has an even balance of darkness and light which keeps you fully immersed in this album from start to finish. Recorded in Australia at the home of his record label (Medici Studios), it is the result of years spent on the road playing gigs and surfing his way around the country.
Ashleigh Mannix is a fresh face to the Australian music scene. With her carefree nature she is combining folk and pop genres to create a unique blend of music that is attracting both local and global attention. Ashleigh is an independent artist and until mid 2008 had no releases in stores. It was her strength as a live artist which caught the attention of the music industry. She was invited to perform at the relaunch of The Rolling Stone magazine where she was introduced as “unknown and unsigned” performing alongside Neil Finn, Powderfinger and The Living End to a packed Horden Pavillion. Baskery (Sweden) + Jungal
Baskery’s MySpace page describes their sound as “high voltage,” “killbilly,” “banjopunk” and “blues-grass.” Albeit tongue and cheek descriptions, they exemplify the fact that this trio that hails from Stockholm, Sweden doesn’t play by anyone’s rules when it comes to creating a sound that is pure and unique and not bound to a specific genre. The Bondesson sisters - Greta, Stella and Sunniva, evoke a rebellious attitude that is more punk in attitude than most of their contemporaries that play roots infused music. Their incendiary sound is ignited by Greta’s six string distorted slide banjo playing, all while providing beats with her feet on kick and snare, Sunniva’s emotive twangy vocals and frenetic rhythm guitar playing and Stella’s hard driving slap driven upright bass. All this is further highlighted by their tight vocal harmonies. A combination of alternative country, blues and rock and roll, their emotive sound is reminiscent of a jam taking place in a dusty saloon in Tennessee between Johnny Cash, an acoustic blues Led Zeppelin with the Andrew sisters sweetening the pot with the melody on top. Jason Collett (Broken Social Scene...Canada) + Dead Letter Chorus + Zeus (Canada)
They say that life begins at 40, but in the case of Jason Collett, that’s not just some overly optimistic bumpersticker slogan. To many indie-rock fans, Jason Collett is the wise, big-brother character in Broken Social Scene: the calm, cool, collected totem of stability in a band defined by drama and chaos — “our Tom Petty figure,” as BSS figurehead Kevin Drew once (half-jokingly) dubbed him. But at the core of Collett’s big brotherly wisdom is the idea that, the older you get, the more you realize there’s still so much to learn.
Dead Letter Chorus return with “Covered By Snow”, the first single from their as yet untitled forthcoming sophomore release. Having spent over 6 weeks touring Canada, the band comes home amidst large success in Canada where their previous record, The August Magnificent, was received with open arms inciting some critics to call them “the best band outside of Canada in the past 5 years” |

Steve Poltz (USA) + Ange Takats
Steve co-wrote Jewels ‘You Were Meant For Me’, and Steve Poltz is not normal.
He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada) but has lived most of his life in Southern California and those geographic poles are quite likely responsible for his unhinged genius. Over the course of his life he’s met Elvis Presley (who hugged his sister for far too long), trick or treated at Liberace’s house (each finger had a diamond ring), was Bob Hope’s favorite altar boy (according to him), bravely traveled the world busking before he knew how to do it, famously co-wrote “You Were Meant For Me” with Jewel, pissed off David Cassidy and can count some of the world’s coolest people as fans.
Ange Takats…Foreign correspondent turned folk singer has also done some strange things in her life. She landed in a folk rock band in Bangkok, chased love all the way to Ontario, joined a knitting group, met an Irish nudist and has a song for every tale on her debut album Aniseed Tea.Winner of the National Folk Festival’s Vocal Excellence Award, Ange has been gathering a steady following in folk festival circles over the past two years but her audience expanded by a million listeners when Fran Kelly's top rating Breakfast Show on Radio National decided to feature her as 'Album of the Week'. |

Chase The Sun + Cass Eager + Claude Hay
Chase The Sun is one Australian band with its roots in the blues scene who are letting their love of rock and roll fully hang out, infusing their take on the blues with loud guitar, blazing hard funk and a cranking 70’s southern rock feel. Rednecks & Gentlemen is Chase The Sun’s second album, and it features lashings of blues-inspired rock. It’s raw, low-down and dirty, full of effortless swagger and stagger and very, very good.
Cass Eager is a graduate of Bondi Beach’s thriving funk scene,’s music takes heed of Soul and Blues, solidly dished up with Roots & Rhythm. Her distinctive pipes have drawn comparisons to everyone from Janis Joplin to Bonnie Raitt, but Soul Sister Cass is no pale imitation.
Claude Hay fuses slide guitar, sitar, bass and electronic percussion in a loop-driven edge-of-the-seat live show that invokes the best of stomping trad blues with a funk-dance edge that is making people’s ears stand up and take notice. More info... Tickets $15.50 inc GST and booking fees
