The Fumes + Carmen Townsend + The Blackwater Fever

Having just notched up another swag of great reviews and healthy crowds with ‘Elliot Brood’ from Canada in tow on an east coast capital city tour, The Fumes quickly announce round two with another fine Canadian act in ‘Carmen Townsend’ joining them as special guest support.  The Fumes stripped it back a tad and delivered tracks not heard for some time on the run in October and fans can expect more of the same in December with a good dash of rock this time.  Just as capable of blowing you away with booming rock tracks like ‘The Letter’ as they are at jerking tears on ‘Sundancer’, their live show is one that drags you through the full range of blues-rock emotion from open to encore.  In The Fumes, you have a duo completely in tune with each other, their abilities and the style of music that they create, all of which are consistently proven each and every time they take the stage. Jez Mead + Lanie Lane

Jez Mead is the archetypal slow burner. Relying on a DIY attitude and an unyielding touring ethic, Mead has been building a fire of support through appearances at almost every major roots festival in the country and unwaveringly positive word-of-mouth.
To think that Mead has achieved so much without mainstream exposure is testament to his craft, although reviews for the new single are suggesting this troubadour is about to turn a spark into an inferno. Reverb magazine calls it “foot-stomping, folklore brilliance”, whilst Cream found it to be “rough & masculine”. However, Martin Jones from Rhythm describes the most earnest scene: “In ‘Town’s Too Small’ Mead is dark, relentless, driving… and therefore, poignant. He’s sitting you down and staring you in the eye rather than buying you a drink and dragging you onto the dance floor.”
Jez will be touring nationally in support of “Town’s Too Small” through November and December; joined by Lanie Lane, celebrating the release of her long awaited debut single 'What Do I Do. More info...

Holly Throsby + Guests

Before having finished recording recently in NY with Sarah Blasko and Sally Seltmann two years had passed since the intimate, striking joys of Holly Throsby’s ‘A Loud Call’. In that time, she has toured extensively across the globe, releasing the record through Europe, Japan & the UK. This year, Holly returned to work with long-time friend & producer, Tony Dupé, in a 19th century Methodist church in Wildes Meadow, New South Wales. They recorded two albums back to back: a technicolour, sound-effect laden children’s record due for release this October, and a brand new collection of songs which make up Holly’s fourth album, ‘Team’. The first single, 'Here Is My Co-Pilot', sees Throsby blossom with bright overlapping vocals, thumping box drums, and handmade pop arrangements. Mixed by Burke Reid (The Drones, Jack Ladder, The Mess Hall) at Sydney’s BJB studios, it is a warm and emboldened departure. To celebrate this new chapter, Holly and her band, The Hello Tigers, will hit the road for the first time since 2008 with an East Coast Australian tour. More info...

It’s been a hell of a ride since The Audreys first took their trademark roots/alt/country sound out of the studio and onto stages in 2006.  Their 2 albums “Between Last Night and Us” and “When The Flood Comes” both took out the ARIA for Best Blues and Roots album giving them a strike rate the envy of many a musician. 4 and 5 star album reviews , rave live reports, shows in the US, Canada,  and Europe followed sold out shows in Australia, and brought The Audreys to mid 2009 , when they started piecing together the first notes of their 3rd record, “Sometimes The Stars.”  It’s been over 2 years since Australia has seen the band playing many of these cities and towns, and with a new touring band backing Taasha and Tristan,  these are shows not to miss. More info...

Monique Brumby & Dianna Anaid

Australian singer/songwriters Diana Anaid & Monique Brumby are artists who have seen it all in the music industry. Having toured together in 2001, they struck up a friendship that sees them re-unite this year for their Love Is A Weapon Tour performing intimate acoustic shows that will engage audiences with new songs and quirky live collaboration. Both Brumby & Anaid released their debut albums in 1997, both have record label and life experiences that make for great bed time stories for over 18's as well as entertaining song writing and live performance banter. Both have forged careers in the cut-throat world of the music industry and by a strange yet synchronistic twist of fate both women have just released their 4th studio albums. Fittingly they are touring nationally playing a string of double headline performances across Australia in August 2010.

Wilson Pickers + Special Guests

The Wilson Pickers feature 5 great and individual singers/songwriters, who all embrace the spiritual feeling one gets when singing in harmony. The band creates an earthy energy by using purely organic stringed and reeded instruments. After gathering an initial repertoire of cover songs from artists such as Townes Van Zandt, Flatt and Scruggs, Steve Earle, Dolly Parton, Paul Kelly and Bob Dylan, The Wilson Pickers have bravely undertaken the task of writing their own material with much success. The Australian-born lads dare not take on bluegrass traditionalists of old but instead are aiming to craft their own individual style based on the bluegrass configuration of intruments and ideas. The Wilson Pickers are Sime Nugent (harp/vox), Danny Widdicombe (guitar/vox), Ben Salter (banjo/vox), John Bedggood (fiddle/mandolin/vox) and Andrew Morris (guitar/vox).

Shane Howard + Special Guests

In 1982, Shane Howard's massive anthem "Solid Rock" from the album "Spirit of Place", (recorded with his legendary band "Goanna"), reverberated across the airwaves and still does today. A prolific songwriter, he and his songs continue to champion the cause of the underdog, provide meaningful insights into the human spirit and interpret the Australian landscape in a way that has helped to build a bridge between Aboriginal and non Aboriginal peoples. A number of his songs have been recorded by artists in Australia and beyond.
In July 2010, Shane Howard releases his new studio album, Goanna Dreaming, and will be touring nationally. Produced by Kerryn Tolhurst, (Dingoes) and Howard, this trans-Pacific recording project began in Tucson, Arizona in Tolhurst’s studio and was completed back in Australia.

The Beards + Special Guests

The Beards are a bearded four-piece from Adelaide, South Australia, whose catalogue consists entirely of songs about beards and having beards. Onstage, The Beards preach about the virtues of having a beard with near-militant intensity. The beardless members of the crowd may find themselves singled out and chastised for their lack of facial hair as The Beards sing crowd favourites like Growing a Beard, Beard Revolution and No Beard, No Good, while those with beards may be brought onstage as an example of what having a beard is all about. But as hilarious as this eccentric outfit are, they can be equally appreciated for their musical originality, instrumental ability and professionalism.

They are loved for their blend of traditional and original material, and their uplifting and joyous approach to live performance. ‘Cloudstreet’ have gone from strength to super strength in recent years, with several epic tours of Europe, Australia & New Zealand and a brilliant new album “Circus of Desires”. The Wildes + Special Guests

The Wildes released Ballad of a Young Married Man rather quietly in 2009 but the press were particularly vocal and complimentary. The classy debut was produced by ARIA award recipient Jonathan Burnside (Sleepy Jackson) and managed to intrigue young audiences and folks not traditionally drawn towards alternative country or indeed country music at all. By the end of 2009 the media were proclaiming the disc “an epiphany to non-believers!” The Wildes were damn cool and it was catching on. The young four piece from Melbourne wear their old-school Americana influences on their sleeve but bristle with Aussie exuberance. In a live setting they get to show their larrikin side – delighting audiences in pubs, clubs and theatres – more often than not to full houses. Their blend of alt country and indie folk has drawn comparisons to artists as diverse as Steve Earle, Nick Cave, The Waterboys, Gram Parsons and Wilco.

Mental As Anything + Stylus

A popular urban myth concerns a group of art students who passed themselves off as a band in order to con the local publican into giving them a gig in exchange for free beer. The deception worked better than intended, and the group came to be known as ‘Mental as Anything’. Nearly three decades later, they are still irritating the public with their highly listenable, idiosyncratic brand of garage pop.
Stylus, the only Australian artists ever be released by Motown Records are ‘Back from the Past’ reforming for a series of shows. Yes we’re all older than we were in 1975 when Stylus had their first two big hits, ‘Summer Breeze’ and ‘Living in a World of Make Believe’, but the music has lived on and still sounds fresh today. Less can be said of course for the fashion and the clothes that Stylus wore on Countdown back then!

In 1983, shortly after John Schumann Redgum wrote and recorded Australia’s Vietnam War anthem, “I Was Only 19”, Redgum recorded and toured its most successful album “Caught in the Act”. Though Redgum performed in many combinations over the years, many Australians consider that its unplugged line-up showed off the band and its songs to best effect – as well as John Schumann’s acerbic wit and dry story-telling. John Schumann’s new band, The Vagabond Crew featuring his close Redgum mate, Hugh McDonald, has gathered a legion of fans in Queensland from its highly acclaimed performances at the various festivals at Woodford and its recent Anzac concerts at Gaythorne, Goodna and Twin Towns Services Club. Mr Percival + Joei

After years of singing with conventional bands, Bondi's Mr Percival found the strength to go it alone. As musicians go, Mr Percival (aka Darren Percival) travels light these days. A Mr Percival performance requires only Percival, his microphone and a few electronic pedals with which he records and loops his voice to create beats, basslines, harmonies and melodies. The result is a rather special take on a cappella. Using only his voice, Mr Percival can sound as cavernous and rich as a Brooklyn gospel choir or as thoroughly danceable as your favourite hip-hop DJ. Percival wasn't always a solo act. He has sung jazz and big-band music for over a decade, most notably as a vocalist for James Morrison's touring band.

Paul Greene Band + Special Guests
‘Everywhere is Home’ Tour/CD Launch

Paul Greene’s three and a half octave voice, catchy melodies, witty lyrics and unique arrangements make him one of Australia’s most exciting musical prospects. His music is a magnificent concoction of soul, folk, pop, roots and rock which he delivers all by his lonesome, with only a battery of well worn guitars, a stomp-box and a belt full of harmonicas for company. One of those rare artists whose songs are infectious and easily accessible, yet full of depth and complexity he is equally as well versed as a songwriter and an interpreter of other people’s material.
Greene has built a loyal and enthusiastic following on his willingness to get out on the road and tour, and tour, and tour. Now a regular on the festival circuit the past year has seen him draw praise from the likes of Ani DiFranco, The Waifs, Patty Griffin and Pete Murray, amongst others. This will be a rare band show, the first time Greene has toured with a full band for a number of years. The new album ‘Everywhere is Home’ will be released on April 19, 2010.

The Beards + A French Butler Called Smith

The Frenchys’ are a latin funk dance manic pack of cool cats that we all love here on the coast.

The Mess Hall ‘For The Birds Tour’ + Bridezilla + Cabins

'For The Birds' is a record that sees The Mess Hall heading towards a new kind of beatnik soul that is very much their own. Every song is infused with a gritty kind of beauty, a surfeit of swing and sense of experimentation that is a natural progression from everything they achieved on their previous release, 'Devils Elbow' (winner of the Australian Music Prize in 2007). ‘For The Birds’ sets the band apart as one who create their own world and fill it with narratives of the broken, the forgotten, the misunderstood, and very occasionally, the redeemed, and here those themes are refined and expanded upon.

Chris Smither (USA)

One of North America’s leading blues and folk artists, Chris Smither is renowned for his alluring baritone vocals, superb song writing and outstanding musicianship. Smither is a proud carrier of a true American tradition, regularly performing masterful arrangements of some of the classic African American blues tunes. His own songs display a wry, intellectual, deep look at it all, “on the outside looking in”, as one of his best new songs describes. His live performance is further enhanced by the same dry, darkish sense of humour that is prevalent in so many of his songs. This is Smither’s fifth visit to Australia and he brings with him a recently released eleventh studio album, “Time Stand Still”.

Lulo Reinhardt Project (Germany)

If you were at the last Lulo concert we know you won’t miss this and you will bring friends, it was just brilliant. Along the way Lulo has gathered the best musicians around him to create his personal project. Lulo Reinhardt Project is the accomplishment of a maturing style and artistic creation, which you cannot classify. Swinging from tune to tune, Lulo Reinhardt brings into his music his gypsy roots as well as flamenco or Latin rhythms from Cuba to Brazil. Thanks to a careful choice of musicians, whom he worked previously with, and who join him in his musical fantasy, Lulo Reinhardt is bringing up a top-level performance that enchants any audience. His desire to evolve musically has as much to do with Django's influence as anything else, he says. "If you listen to Django Reinhardt in the '30s, '40s and '50s, he changed his style every five years. He was really modern in the way he created new styles and ways of playing."

Borich + Borich
(Kevin Borich + Lucius Borich (COG) & Harry Brus)
Doors 3pm - show 4pm

Kevin Borich is still every inch the slashing, stylish axeman who has come to take you higher. Without a hint of parody, he struts the stage at major festivals in lace shirt, snakeskin pants and cocky stance, gleefully unleashing the credible, fluid licks that have accorded him the status of a legend. Borich, the iconic rock/blues guitarist who livened up the national Long Way To The Top tour with fiery renditions of his 1971 hit Gonna See My Baby Tonight, has a theory that music “keeps you young”. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Borich makes few concessions to the passage of time – although the mantra is now sex, fresh air and rock’n’roll. Joining Kev for this gig is his son Lucius from ‘COG’ on drums and the living legend of bass Mr Harry Brus.

In 1998, The Angels were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame by their peers.
