Archie Roach

In 1988 much of Australia was celebrating two hundred years of white settlement but a young Archie Roach was expressing in song what many who weren’t celebrating were feeling. For many indigenous people there was anger, despair, disadvantage, land rights battles and deaths in custody. Archie Roach dealt with this by writing songs about his own experiences and feelings – and then performing these songs to whom ever would listen. In early 1988 Paul Petran, the producer of the ABC Radio National program, Music Deli asked Archie if he would come into the ABC studio to record a few songs to play on radio. Archie agreed. Twenty one years later Archie will present a collection of these songs and launch his new album ‘Music Deli Presents Archie Roach -1988’ at Joe’s Waterhole, which feature some of the first ever recordings by a young Archie Roach. Aside from his recorded offerings and many awards, Archie has also performed with some of the top names in the entertainment business - including Paul Kelly, Bob Dylan, Billy Bragg, Tracy Chapman, Weddings Parties Anything, Crowded House, Suzanne Vega, Joan Armatrading and Patti Smith.

The band celebrated the national release of their Eastern-fuelled, Zeppelin-stained self-titled debut with a short run of electric shows around Australia where they welcome bass player Jay Cortez to the fold (Sleepy Jackson, End Of Fashion).
“The Armada is a very big, dark, Satanic, sexual rock show, and I love that, it's a big part of my personality.” says Martin. “The feedback has been amazing, from Tea Party fans and new fans. The Armada did a trial run in Australia in November, and you'd think that the audience for my music would get older. But there was young people everywhere - 20- year-olds getting into it and digging it because it's just great rock 'n' roll music.'' More info

Mark Seymour

Mark Seymour is internationally regarded as one of Australia's best singer / songwriters. Since making his name as the lead singer of Hunters & Collectors, Mark has enjoyed a stellar career as a singer and acoustic guitarist. He’s also composed film scores, written and performed music for theatrical productions and acted. In 2008 Mark wrote & released a novel, Thirteen Tonne Theory, a loose collection of stories, observations and exploits from his 18 years with Hunters & Collectors and subsequent career as a solo musician. Mark reached Australian rock cult status throughout the 80's and 90's as the lead singer for Hunters & Collectors, the band performed around the world, a rollicking eight piece funk ensemble. When in 1998, Mark decided he’d done all he could as the front man of Hunters & Collectors, he plunged into the unknown, finding himself alone on stage with just an acoustic guitar. In going solo, Mark discovered a new and refreshing intensity in his voice that he’d believed he’d lost in the band. Mark Seymour’s subsequent five solo albums, each of which has been highly successful, still bare the raw, emotional hallmarks of his writing for the landmark Hunters & Collectors album, Human Frailty.

A passionate, intense vocalist, Mark continues to draw a strong crowd. Mark Seymour’s song writing ever evolves, as he produces songs that resonate and permeate one’s consciousness. Mark Seymour’s music and lyrics have formed an indelible part of Australia’s musical landscape. More Info

Fri 25   Tim Rogers (You Am I)

To coincide with the UK release of his latest solo album, The Luxury of Hysteria, Australian rock 'n' roll icon Tim Rogers is back from another international jaunt playing shows in Germany, Ireland, England and the US. The Luxury of Hysteria was released in Australia last October, to much public and critical acclaim, and the accompanying tour launch included two sold out shows at the iconic Sydney Opera House, both of which garnered the boy from Kalgoorlie standing ovations.

Tim Rogers formed You Am I with his school friend Nick Tischler and his own older brother Jaimme Rogers in 1989, though the lineup shifted around early on, settling on Andy Kent on bass and Mark Tunaley on drums. Russell Hopkinson joined, forming the 'classic' You Am I lineup. Ten Years on and Tim released his first solo album, ‘What Rhymes With Cars And Girls’. Not intended as a sign of the demise of You Am I, it was simply a case of Rogers having some songs and some time to himself, the rest they say…is history. More info

Sat 8   Borich & Borich
featuring Kevin Borich, Lucius Borich (Cog) and Harry Brus (Barnes, Geyer, etc…)

"...live, you can’t help but be moved by the passion and intensity of his playing and performance, whether he’s sliding with his resonator or inducing his glittering, black Strat to scream and wail it will be an experience you will take to your grave."
Kevin Borich is still every inch the slashing, stylish axeman who has come to take you higher. Without a hint of parody, he struts the stage at major festivals in lace shirt, snakeskin pants and cocky stance, gleefully unleashing the credible, fluid licks that have accorded him the status of a legend. Borich, the iconic rock/blues guitarist who livened up the national Long Way To The Top tour with fiery renditions of his 1971 hit Gonna See My Baby Tonight, has a theory that music “keeps you young”. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Borich makes few concessions to the passage of time – although the mantra is now sex, fresh air and rock’n’roll. Joining Kev for this gig is his son Lucius from ‘COG’ on drums and the living legend of bass Mr Harry Brus. www.youtube.com/watch?v=628rwZg6X-c

Dallas Frasca ‘Not For Love Or Money’ CD launch

It’s no surprise that “Not For Love Or Money”, the debut album by Aussie roots/rock powerhouse Dallas Frasca has a sense of exhilaration and dynamics throughout. That’s because Frasca and her partner in crime, Jeff Curran (guitarist) wrote the tracks during a heavy-duty bout of touring.
“Not For Love Or Money” is the sort of record on which each listener will find a highpoint moment. But it creates a solidarity with its audience because is made by a performer who quite clearly lives and breathes music. It marks an exciting new career milestone for Dallas Frasca. More Info

Augie March + special guests - Gareth Liddiard and Dan Luscombe from The Drones

For the past 13 years Melbourne band Augie March have achieved what very few bands, indeed artists in any field in Australia, can claim to have achieved. While steadily building a loyal and ferocious fan base, they have simultaneously sustained critical acclaim and commercial viability.

This year has seen the completion of two very successful and very different tours on the back of the release of their fourth LP “Watch Me Disappear”. The most recent, titled “On The Quiet” was a sellout, a rare presentation of the band stripped back and swinging, a revelation for many in the audience who perhaps had always heard the music but never realised it was 5 human beings with sticks and strings making it come about.

In contrast this winter, Augie March will don full regalia and take the garden of forking paths into their own schizophrenic past where minotaur’s with broken hearts hold up the front bar, manic pixies bore repeatedly into the necks of corporate swindlers, and the human condition gets ridden roughshod by rabid monkeys into an unthinkable tomorrow. Plus there may be a love song or two. Watch Me Set My Strange Sun You Bloody Choir will be a trip down memory lane for Augie fans because all four albums will have an equal showing on this grand tour.

Multi–media celebrity, Doug Mulray describes them as ‘the best acoustic blues band in the country’.

Renée Geyer

Renée has finished her new album for Liberation Blue, called "Renéesance". In the tradition of the series it's a reworking of her best and greatest tracks. Produced by Bruce Haymes and featuring Jeff Burstin on guitar together with Bruce on keyboards (and noises) it's a wonderful visitation of Renee's greatest and a must for all fans. Sometimes words aren’t enough. All the things that have and will be said about Renée Geyer…one of the world’s finest singers…Australian music legend…are true and undeniable, but saying that about her still doesn’t say enough. Renée Geyer is Renée Geyer, a unique talent, not a singer whose career is dependant on yesterday or tomorrow’s hit song, but someone who lives for her next performance, on stage or on record, someone who refuses to rest on her laurels. The voice was always there. From the first time she opened her mouth those who heard turned their heads, but that wasn’t enough for Renée Geyer, still isn’t enough for Renée Geyer. She’s much more now than she ever was.

“I do rhythm and blues,” Renée explains. “This genre of music picked me. I didn’t pick it. From a very early age I was listening to it on my transistor radio under my pillow. At fourteen or fifteen years of age I knew that this was the music I connected with. With this record I’ve turned some kind of corner where the suit that was bought for me as a young girl, that I knew was a beautiful suit, only just now fits. It just feels right.

Woohoo Revue “Dance Time”

The sound of The Woohoo Revue ‘reflects the unique experience of a ‘gypsy’ band raised on Melbourne dance floors’ ~Beat Magazine~.

Freakish Balkan tunes are delivered with a dose of the vaudeville, making The Woohoo Revue’s show a genuine musical circus.
Their act features old-world class, theatrical entertainment and childish joy performed by six musicians who might have been trained from childhood by an overbearing Russian ringmaster.
Formed in 2008, The Woohoo Revue is a new band with old world influences. The group has quickly established itself in its hometown of Melbourne with a series of shows that blend scorching gypsy themes with funky rhythms.
Following the release of their album, Dear Animals, The Woohoo Revue jumped in the caravan and met some old comrades along the highway. They have traded gypsy metal licks with The Crooked Fiddle Band, cheated at poker with Juke Baritone and danced around the fire with Mojo Juju and the Snake Oil Merchants.

The band has also fast established itself on the festival circuit by getting the big crowds dancing at Folk Rhythm and Life, High Vibes, The Village and The Maya Festival.

Carus + Loren + Drew Wilson

Hailing from Fremantle it is easy to mistake Carus as “just another roots act” in the style of The Waifs and The John Butler Trio. He hit the folk-rock highway ten years ago, he plays over two hundred shows every year and he has sold tens of thousands of CDs. He plays the major festivals and has a passionate fan base that any D.I.Y folky would be proud of.
Yet, in many ways Carus owes more to the OZ pub rock tradition than his rootsy contemporaries. His show is essentially a rock and roll show. While he is a story telling troubadour in the Paul Kelly style, he “goes off” in the adrenaline fuelled manner of The Beasts, The Gurus and The Oils. A lyrical observer of society he may be- but a shoe gazer he ain't.
The tension between the sensitive balladeer and the fold back leaping, nut bag skeg with his guitar behind his head never left my mind during the entire recording process. While Carus says in the title track- he can fit his life into three boxes and go traveling, he himself is extremely difficult to squeeze into a single box.

Australia's Got Talent Winner

All Ages…Must be accompanied by an adult…
Doors 7pm show 7-30 end 9-30

At just 17 years of age, Joe Robinson has secured a reputation as one of the worlds finest young guitarists. His unique acoustic guitar style has caught the attention of Les Paul, Steve Vai, Brad Paisley, Tommy Emmanuel and many others. From winning the hit television series "Australia's Got Talent", to recording in Nashville with "Producer of the year", Frank Rogers, few doubt that this humble young man is destined for greatness.

Joe started playing piano at the age of six, only because he was told his fingers were too small to play the guitar. After 4 grueling years of classical piano, Joe quit and began to play the guitar (aged 10).
He outgrew his guitar teacher in less than 12 months, and he started to teach himself from the internet.
Like a sponge, Joe dragged his parents around to any music situation on offer. He would jam in local bars, with his guitar cable through the window, in order not to be thrown out. From lots and lots of jamming, Joe developed incredibly mature listening and improvisation skills. It also gave him versatility, playing Jazz, Country, Rock, and Blues.

Reggie Watts is a completely unique comedian AND musician. He shakes new meaning into what you can do with a human voice, a microphone and a loop machine. Exploiting a jaw-dropping ten-octave vocal range he creates funky bass lines and soulful diva-esque vocals to underpin hilarious, off-the cuff riffs on everything from ancient history and technology, science and racism, to theology and pop culture. Channeling over 300 characters, his mix of improvised music, absurd comedy and visceral social commentary makes him a one-of–a-kind performer.

An incisive commentator on all that surrounds him, and one-man-band, Watts is like a tornado traversing hip-hop, trip-hop, 80's pop alternative, nu-metal and classical opera. No two songs or performances are ever the same, as he disorientates and stuns his audiences like a supernatural force. And globe-trotting designer Jonathan Oxlade is creating visuals for Reggie to respond to his own unique way.

Born in Germany and raised in the US, Reggie is a classically trained pianist and jazz singer. He made his name playing and singing in the Seattle music scene through the 90s, shifting to a music- comedy hybrid Reggie infiltrated the New York and Los Angeles comedy scenes, and top festivals including South By South West (USA), Edinburgh Fringe (UK), Montreal’s Just For Laughs and Cape Town Comedy Festival.
He lives in Brooklyn, New York and frequently performs alongside Regina Spektor, Imogen Heap and the Dresden Dolls, Flight of the Concordes , Arj Barker, French chanteuse Camille to name a few.

Fri 24   Stylus ‘The Original Australian Motown White Soul Band’

Dress to impress your memory, not your kids
The only Australian band to be signed by the American Motown label and the first ever non Afro American band. Stylus are ‘Back from the Past’ reforming for a series of shows. Yes, we’re all older than we were in 1975 when Stylus had their first two big hits, Summer Breeze and Living in a World of make Believe, but the music has lived on and still sounds fresh today. Less can be said of course for the fashion and the clothes that Stylus wore on Countdown back then!

Fronted by the extraordinary vocal talents and surely one of this country’s greatest voices, Peter Cupples, Stylus have always been considered to be some of the best musicians in the business so it’s not surprising that the reformed band can still make these songs come alive just like in the 70s. The band is made up of the original members, Peter Cupples (vocals/guitar), Ronny Peers (Guitar), Sam McNally (Keyboards) and Ashley Henderson (Bass & Vocals). The only new member in the line-up is the remarkable David Jones on drums...

Thurs 5   Preston Reed (Scotland/England)

He can’t be doing that. It’s a familiar reaction to the one-man symphonies on Reed’s 15 studio albums, as the maestro fuses chord-based grooves, soaring melodic runs and polyrhythmic percussion with his breathtaking two-handed style. Yet this is not guitar wizardry for its own sake. Unlike many instrumentalists, the power and depth of Reed’s original songwriting is as unique as the man’s execution, as blues, rock, funk and jazz meet, embrace, interlock and attack to create a sonic brew quite unlike anything you’ve heard before. Ears prick up. Heads turn. Feet tap. Hearts melt. Tickets $38

Fri 6   Mat McHugh (Beautiful Girls)

In his role as frontman for the Beautiful Girls, Mat McHugh is prone to reggae cliches, so it's a pleasant surprise to see that when left to his own devices he sounds refreshingly original.

Free of the BG's, McHugh mines some darker territory, as well as keeping things sparse and simple. At times he brings to mind an upbeat Elliott Smith, at others, he sounds like an acoustic Frank Black. Thankfully, he's not another Jack Johnson clone. Tickets $20 pre-sale $25 @ door

Sat 7   Paul Greene

Over the past few years Paul Greene has been given the thumbs up by John Butler, The Waifs & Ani DiFranco, hi-jacked by Midnight Oil’s Rob Hirst and served as the inspiration behind Ben Harper’s ‘Diamonds On The Inside’. He has sold nearly 40,000 albums (an impressive amount in his native Australia); however, you won’t see his name on any charts, as Greene has taken a staunchly independent path which has led him on a journey through countless festivals, bar rooms and concert halls across Australia. Tickets $17

Andrew Morris + Sue Anne

When Andrew Morris is not playing guitar for Bernard Fanning or touring with the Wilson Pickers, he’s releasing damn fine albums of his own. His latest CD ‘Needs and Wants’ will cement Andrew as one of Australia’s finest. Andrew will be joined on the road by the same group of Melbourne musicians who leant their talents during the recording process of Needs & Wants. With only five days to record, and no rehearsal time, other musician may have walked away with a half baked album. Not this group of consummate musical professionals!
It seemed only fitting to bring the same group back together for a tour. Keyboard player Steve Hesketh (Jet, Paul Kelly), bassist Pat Bourke (Dallas Crane, Tex Perkins) and drummer Roger Bergodaz. $12 pre-sale or $15 @ door

Fri 20   Bill Chambers & Kevin Bennett (Flood)

Leading bluesroots and alt country exponents Bill Chambers and Kevin Bennett will combine their talents in an exquisite double-header.

Bill, father of Kasey Chambers is one of those growling singers who owes a substantial debt to both Bob Dylan and John Prine. There’s much more to Bill Chambers than just being Kaseys dad. The patriarch of the Chambers Clan is considered by some to be Australias premier alt-country guitarist. He can be a master of delicate picking on Dobro or Lap Steel and a demon on Slide.

Kevin Bennett, front man for ‘The Flood’ and good friend of Bills will join Bill for a Duo tour of the Country and there is bound to be some ‘pin drop’ moments in the show.

Sat 21   Martin Martini & the Bone Palace Orchestra

Martin Martini doesn’t really trust humans – he prefers animals and chess. ‘I love a game where a horse can eat a bishop. There should be more of that. I love a game where a queen takes pawn. I think all queens should take a bit of pawn. The world would be a much better place if there was just a little more pawn…”

His unconventional approach to life mirrors itself in his music. Nobody explained to him that you couldn’t make an orchestra with just a few freakishly talented misfits playing clarinet, trombone, guitar, bass, drums and keys. So in defiance he formed the Bone Palace Orchestra; fusing grooves of jazz, blues, and matchless show-tunes; with good old fashioned rock’n’roll. Tickets $16

Dallas Frasca has an undeniable stage presence. Her powerful and commanding vocal style is one of a kind; raw, gritty and unrestrained, this woman is a force to be reckoned with. Joined by the upside down, left handed, back to front, slide dobro and mandolin extraordinaire, Jeff Curran makes the two piece without kit a wall of guitars and stomp box that delve into raw, double duelling slides, launching from a

Musicians and friends of Sound Engineer, Stuart Koch are staging a benefit concert for Stuart's family to be held at Joe's Waterhole. THE BEEZ (Germany)

The Beez have furnished their house with musical bric-a-brac from around the world – a potpourri of moving, silly, deep and sometimes meaningless pop and rock songs. These songs are, however, anything but common or garden variety. The four tonal interior decorators from the Beez rearrange and craft a song until a certain stylistically unmistakable Beez Feng Shui emerges. The Beez are at home on any stage and travel light-four voices, two acoustic guitars, an acoustic bass and an accordion and, it has to be said, more than a few costumes…The Beez are renowned as excellent hosts, serving lavish lashings of humour and musicality guaranteed to charm every audience. ANGE TAKATS ‘Aniseed Tea’ CD launch
The National Folk Festival winner of 2008 Lis Johnston award for vocal excellence

Her storytelling is laced with honesty and grace and it is the ease in which she breathes life into her intimate memories that makes for a well-balanced and gratifying listen. Songwriting ability aside, it’s Ange’s voice that is truly the star of the show. Reminiscent of American folk singer Joan Baez, Takats’ exceptional voice is fine, smooth and almost effortless as it slips from her lips. There is such disarming honesty to these songs… the arrangements reflect Ange’s on stage performance style; they are mostly understated and always graceful. Tickets $15
