TEX PERKINS
with James Cruickshank
Doors 7-30 ...Show 8-30pm
Tex Perkins is hitting the road
again - this time just bringing
his swag and acoustic guitar. Joining
Tex on his travels is good friend
and former Cruel Sea cavalier James
Cruickshank. Tex and James had some
good laughs, some good stories and
played some quality shows as they
staggered around the country together
in December last year. Not satisfied
with just that tour, the boys are
doing it all over again.
Tex Perkins is not one to take a
break. In his spare time, he has
just finished the recordings for
his new studio album, being released
through Universal Records this year.
This latest recording has left Tex
itching to hit the road again.
Tex’s perfect accomplice for
his travels is James Cruickshank,
who has a history of sharing the
stage with Tex. Whilst also being
an occasional Dark Horse, a regular
Blackeyed Susan, and a honorary
member of the Mick Harvey and Nick
Barker clans. Last July James made
a celebrated reappearance onto the
music scene with his latest creation
‘Hello Human’ to glowing
national reviews.

ANGIE
HART (Frente) with Dave McCormack
(Custard)
Doors 7-30
...Show 8-30pm
You might remember a major event
in Australian pop called Frente.
They were from Melbourne; the singer
Angie Hart was only seventeen when
they began and only a couple of
years older when they started having
enormous hits. It all went crackers
for Frente. Totally off the scale
in terms of stardom and recognition
and all that. Angie was just a girl.
But boy, the girl could always sing.
That was then. This is now. Angie’s
got her own thing going on, finally.
And this is the thing: back then
with Frente, it was like she was
trying to be the singer and trying
hard with her singing. Now it’s
all totally effortless, the most
natural thing in the world. It seems
ridiculous that she never did a
solo album before. It seems unthinkable.
How could it be that Angie Hart
is only now ready to be out on her
own?
Well – she is. The debut solo
album is called Grounded Bird and
it’s lovely and strangeregular
Blackeyed Susan, and a honorary
member of the Mick Harvey and Nick
Barker clans. Last July James made
a celebrated reappearance onto the
music scene with his latest creation
‘Hello Human’ to glowing
national reviews.

PAUL GREENE
+ Rob Lonstaff + Sue Anne
After almost
4 weeks in the top on the itunes
Blues/Roots Top Albums Chart, Paul
Greene’s new album Distance
Over Time has finally up crept to
#1. Distance Over Time is a phenomenal
showcase for Paul Greene’s
songwriting skills, justifying the
many critics who regard him as one
of Australian music’s best-kept
secrets. Melbourne's 3PBS’s
tipped it as one of the best Blues
& Roots Tip albums on week of
release while Rhythms said:
"As far
as musicians go, you can liken Culburra
Beach based singer / songwriter,
Paul Greene to a fine wine - maturation
is the key here, and while there's
a while to go, perhaps before you'd
dust him off and enjoy him with
your veal cordon bleu, he's well
on his way, having been down in
the cellar doing the hard yards
for quite some time now." (Sam
Fell, Freelance Writer - Rhythms
/ Inpress / Drum Media/Mess+Noise
/ Australian Guitar)
Sydney Morning
Herald’s Bernard Zuel remarked
how he moves effortlessly “from
rustic folk-pop to unreconstructed
rocker; from herbal roots ex-surfer
type to intense singer-songwriter”.
"Greene's genuine songwriting
stands above all else" proclaimed
the Newcastle Herald; “You
could be forgiven for thinking we
may have our own Jack Johnson but
Greene is more than that!”
exclaims the Daily Telegraph. DIG
radio says, “Paul Greene is
growing into one of the best Australian
singer songwriters” whilst
Nova called his music “refreshingly
honest and as catchy as you like”
before anointing him Australia’s
best unsigned acoustic act in 2007.
Already spinning
on radio from the new album, Greene’s
stunning interpretations of The
Waterboys’ classic The Whole
Of The Moon (which was given the
seal of approval by its composer,
The Waterboys main man Mike Scott,
who proclaimed it to be a ``great
version`` before praising Greene
for his amazing vocals), and Jeff
Buckley’s The Last Goodbye
(a JJJ favourite lifted from the
Buckley tribute album Stars In Their
Belly).
Greene has taken
a staunchly independent path, selling
nearly 30,000 albums locally. He
has played countless festivals,
bar rooms and concert halls across
Australia and recently toured with
Grammy winning U.S singer/songwriter
Patty Griffin and platinum selling
country rocker Adam Brand. Greene
kicked his own national tour on
May 21.

STEPHEN

melancholic …”

Cummings is an Australian folk/roots
pop singer-songwriter. He has been

JEFF LANG
+ Kara Grainger
With his eloquent
guitar, sweet voice and plainspoken
yet sensitive approach to the original
and traditional source material,
Jeff Lang is expanding the boundaries
of traditional folk, country and
blues to create a new brand of nontraditional
music which is undeniably and deeply
steeped in tradition, yet with its
imagination set on future horizons.

HARRY
MANX (Canada) + Yeshe
They call his music “Mysticssippi”
and even Bruce Springsteen is a fan
- unique Canadian bluesman Harry Manx
returns for a long-awaited Australia-wide
tour, bringing with him a stunning
new “live” album to follow
the success of his “Live at
The Basement” DVD of 2004 and
his acclaimed “Mantras for Madmen”
studio album of 2006.
Harry’s been dubbed an “essential
link” between the music of East
and West. Having lived in Europe,
Japan, India and Brazil, it was his
five-year tutelage with renowned Rajasthani
musician Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (Grammy
winner with Ry Cooder for “A
Meeting by the River”) that
forged his now signature east-meets-west
style of music, infusing traditional
American earthy 12-bar blues with
a subtle hint of mystic Indian sounds.
Playing lap-slide guitar, harmonica,
cigar-box guitar, banjo, stomp box
and the 20-stringed Mohan Veena, Harry
envelopes his audience into “The
Harry Zone” with his warm vocals
and haunting original songs, plus
his quirky reworks of some classic
blues.

GUY
DAVIS (USA) + Hat Fitz (solo)
It's difficult
to know where to begin with the story
of New York City bluesman Guy Davis.
Accomplished and acclaimed as a musician,
composer, actor, director and writer,
Davis somehow makes the term multi-talented
seem woefully inadequate. The routes,
and roots, of his blues are as diverse
as the music form itself. It can be
soulful, moaning out a people’s
cry, or playful and bouncy as a hay-ride.
He's a musician, composer, actor,
director, and writer. But most importantly,
Guy Davis is a bluesman. The blues
permeates every corner of Davis' creativity.
Guy is a national treasure in the
USA as are his famous actor/activist
parents. Check out Guy’s website

you at the show.

his follow up album. Lior's second
album was independently released

Endless Road' is the album in which
the gifted songwriter has deviated
from the norm of 'his' genre. From
the opening track, you are drawn
into an aural landscape of another
culture, another life, another mind
that seems littered with raw and
unhesitant feeling. But more importantly,
you are drawn instinctively to a
strong voice that says a million
things......

Dobson is a highly regarded and
popular singer and songwriter in
the Australian music industry. With

A night at
the ‘CHELSEA’ featuring...
Ange Takats, Tom Woodward & Cameron
Elliot
In
the late sixties the Chelsea Hotel
was known as a “rest stop for
rare individuals”…a place
where music legends like Bob Dylan,
Leonard Cohen, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell,
Janis Joplin and Tom Waits spent time.
“A night at the Chelsea”
will showcase the music of Ange Takats,
Tom Woodward and Cameron Elliott –
three singer songwriters who have
been influenced by the musicians who
jammed at the infamous New York hotel.
Singing original compositions as well
as classic Americana covers, these
songwriters will perform at Joe’s
transporting their audience back to
an era when lyrics mattered, melodies
were intricate and music inspired.
Sunshine Coast performer Ange Takats
began her musical journey singing
Joni Mitchell songs in a small folk
bar in Bangkok where she lived for
two years. After releasing her first
EP in 2007, Ange has played support
for Bobby Flynn and Abby Dobson @
Joes as well as various festivals
across the country. Canberra based
alternative country bluesman Tom Woodward
is rapidly carving himself a niche
as a reliable preacher of wicked and
wanton hymns. His music is raw, his
lyrics are sharp and poignant. But
just as concerned as he is with mortality,
melancholia and the macabre, he also
paints a commemorative illustration
of humanity. In stark contrast to
the roughness of Tom’s voice,
Brisbane based Cameron Elliott adds
a reassuring smoothness to each and
every song. The key to Cameron Elliott’s
originality lies in his somewhat unusual
childhood. Having lived in England,
America, Japan and Malaysia all before
the age of 10, the subject matter
of Cameron's poetic lyrics is often
observational and reflective.

fall 2007 SONiA released a new CD
with her band ‘disappear fear’
to the world (al mundo). “t
a n g o" features 13 songs in
Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic and English.
To list just the highlights of Sonia’s
achievements here would be to long.
A favourite at the recent Woodford
festival for many and as one very
high profile performer said “At
last, a protest artist with that substance
from the 60s/70’s we thought
we’d lost”…follow

TINPAN ORANGE
+ Guests
“If
my voice had a baby, it would be hers”
– Renee Geyer
Singer
songwriter duo, Jesse and Emily Lubitz,
write with flare about the poetics
of the everyday uncanny. Their band,
TinPan Orange, find on their musical
journeys love in a flood and solitude
in a crowd, binding the momentary
with the eternal and the playful with
the wretched.
Supported by the weeping violin of
'maestro' Alex Burkoy, and a stirring
rhythm section provided by Gidon Symons
(bass) and Chris Doig (drums), the
songs are dynamic, dramatic, almost
cinematic, yet truly wholesome. Another
highly recommended Woodford act.

The RE-MAINS + Guests
Country
rock’n'roll begins in the accelerator.
Press it down moderately hard as you
motor across the Great Dividing Range.
Ease off as you plummet towards Uralla,
or in the other direction, gallop
by Bolivia, mindful of the kangaroos
arrayed in ranks, saluting ere they
make the mad dash to glory.
Head out west, to Nymagee and beyond.
The ghost of a shearer, white-eyed,
will join you in the passenger seat.
Nod hello, and keep driving, to the
coalface.
At the coalface of country rock’n'roll
it is frequently dusty, dry and hard
work. Beware of burrs in the boxer
shorts, dirt in the engines, dust
in the amps. You may take the stage
uncertain why the endless miles, the
untold broken strings.
But take a break, sleep it off. Steer
your motor to the City Tavern Tamworth.
Sit back and regale yourself with
the careening, shambolic strains of
country rock’n'roll. Johnny
Cash. Jon Spencer. Johnny Green. Bob
Dylan. Ragadoll. The Australian Beefweek
Show. Tonchi. The Re-mains. Identify.
Taste the stench of cordite and ozone.
Drink of the fluids amber, pale, spirituous
and sweet emanating from the bar.
Breathe deep. That smell is the sweat
of country rock’n'roll.

DAVID
ROSS MACDONALD (Waifs, Missy Higgins)
The UNDESIRABLES (Canada)
Aside
from being the Waifs drummer for
the last nine years and having drummed
for Missy Higgins and the Audreys,
David Ross Macdonald also happens
to be one of this country’s
finest guitarists and singer/songwriters.
“David Ross Macdonald is one
of those few songwriters like Nick
Drake, Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes),
and Josh Ritter that can captivate
his listeners armed only with a
voice and guitar.” American
Songwriter Magazine “David
Ross MacDonald's vocals, lyrics,
and intricate fingerstyle guitar
playing bring to mind a collaboration
between Nick Drake and a mid-1970s
Bruce Cockburn... “ Acoustic
Guitar Magazine "...deft guitar
playing ... polished songwriting
... pristine, thoughtful folk rock..."
Penguin Eggs Magazine
The Undesirables are Corin Raymond
and Sean Cotton hailing from Toronto,
Ontario, Canada. For more than ten
years this duo has blazed an international
trail that now brings them to Australia
with their beguiling, haunting and
entertaining show. Their songs and
theatrics draw upon mystical, weird
and heart felt worlds and characters,
past, present, future, real and
imaginary... hard to describe, but
maybe, if you stumbled upon a writers
tavern where Tom Waits, Jim Morrison,
Charles Dickens and Ray Bradbury
were sharing old stories and ale
laden songs, then just maybe you
might be getting close to the energy
and verve of The Undesirables.

The
TOOTHFAERIES + Dave Flower Band
Toothfaeries
became one of Brisbane’s most
popular bands during the 1990s. An
integral part of the explosion of
the local live music scene in the
early part of the decade, they were
intimately associated with the birth
and survival of The Zoo, Brisbane’s
most enduring music venue. Playing
roots music before the category existed,
their acoustic folk/pop sound was
joyful, passionate, and made them
a staple of the Maleny/Woodford and
Australian National Folk Festivals,
although the band also played repeatedly
at Livid and the Big Day Out. The
Toothfaeries released three CDs, and
are still sought after today.

THAT
1 GUY (USA) + Tjupurru
Like a one-man
band plucked from the pages of Dr.
Seuss, ‘That 1 Guy’ delivers
earthshaking future funk from ”the
magic pipe” to accompany his
madcap lyrics about turbo snails,
meat storms, and weasel pot pies."
Necessity is the mother of invention,
but in the case of Mike Silverman’s
slamming, futuristic funk act, the
normal rules of biology just don’t
apply. This one guy is one of the
most prolific and insanely genius
musicians we’ve met in quite
some time. With a rap sheet a mile
long, including a slot on Tom Waits
latest triple CD, and a reputation
for turning out ‘over the top’
live shows where ever he plays, this
virtuoso is a class act all the way.”

SUNSHINE
& CLOUDS…
Featuring: TIM FREEDMAN, OLD MAN
RIVER, JOEL PLASKETT (Can) &
the CUTHBERT NIGHTWALKERS CHOIR
Three
of the country’s most popular
singer songwriters Tim Freedman,
Ohad Rein (Old Man River) and Joel
Plaskett (yeah, he’s Canadian
– but we love him) will be
hitting the road for a triple header
tour with The Cuthbert Night Walkers
Choir in 2008 taking in most of
the East Coast. 2007 has been a
great year for all three artists
– Freedman’s band The
Whitlams performed a series of sold
out gigs backed by a Symphony Orchestra
at the Sydney Opera House; Ohad
has found national exposure thanks
to his catchy pop song La and Plaskett
pleased thousands of fans when he
toured Australia with his band earlier
this year before picking up the
Songwriter of the Year gong at the
Canadian East Coast Music Awards.

AURORA
JANE + BETH PRESTON (USA)
On the road
24/7, Australian artist Aurora Jane
has a story like no other. Her music
reflects the vast distances she travels,
spanning diverse genres, but residing
most comfortably in a funky, rootsy
groove. Sharing stories while she’s
on the move between the Australian
desert, India & North America,
Aurora Jane’s songs display
an insightful global perspective,
yet retain a breathtaking intimacy.
Aurora Jane’s latest album “Universal
Language”, was recorded in Byron
Bay, Australia & New Delhi, India.
Beth Preston resonates to a higher
frequency. Not to say that she's not
down to earth- if you see her play,
you know that what she's sharing is
real. There is no effort to impress
in her presence- only to express herself
with primal resonant vocals, and lyrics
that not only pull the heartstrings,
but also carry a strong positive message.
